Wacky, Wet and Wild Week kicked off on a HOT day here at camp! Looking at the weather reports we can truly say we were blessed to be in the woods yesterday as MANY other places were experiencing temperatures much warmer than we had here at Camp Vick. But, it was warm nonetheless.
Camper registration starts at 3pm and the pavilion/soccer field area quickly filled with eager campers and more than a few new faces. More than half of our campers this week are first timers and we are so excited to welcome a new group to camp!
After the registration process campers head back to their cabins where camp staff have delivered luggage. Then each cabin group chooses their bunk, briefly settles into their cabin before heading back to the soccer field for getting to know you games. Our WSI (Water Safety Instructor) comes in to do swim assessments and each camper then wears a swim bracelet for the week and is assigned a buddy tag for use when swimming.
From there we head back to the pavilion for dinner. Jess and the kitchen staff keep us well fed and we are thankful!
What a blessing it is to have a cook who not only makes great food but also loves to bless our camp community through serving and teaching as well! She even stayed up for the whole campfire and had a ton of fun with us as well!
Speaking of campfire, after chapel and a few other odds and ends we rounded out the night with our first campfire. The glow of the fire on happy camper faces is a sight to remember.
A campfire song favorite here at Camp Vick is called the “Roaming Light” song. I think we like it so much because it allows campers to be the star. And, you know, that’s what we are all about!
“I’m gonna sing, sing, sing.
I’m gonna shout, shout, shout.
I’m gonna sing, I’m gonna shout, ‘Praise the Lord!’
When the Roaming Light goes by all we ask is don’t be shy.
I’m gonna sing, I’m gonna shout, ‘Praise the Lord!”
After we sing this refrain a camper is chosen and the flashlight creates a spot light where they are asked to, “State your name!” And the whole campfire group cheers for the camper who then gets asked a silly question like, “If you could be a piece of silverware, would you be a spoon or a fork.” Often there are motions or silly noises. The song is tons of fun!
